Job summary

Customer, Process, Design (CPD) has around 450 colleagues across HMRC regional centres. There are 7 deputy directors with responsibility at enterprise level for the Customer, improving departmental processes and creating effective designs for change.

This role is in transformation design and we are looking for a senior professional who has significant previous experience of business design and leading teams.

HM Revenue and Customs is delivering an ambitious programme of change and you will have a critical leadership role in strengthening and keeping HMRC focussed on its strategic objectives including improving customer and colleague experience.

Job Description

You will lead a highly motivated team who are passionate about design. The team has around 21 colleagues with 5 team leaders at Grade 6. You be working closely in multi-functional teams with other HMRC business areas including Business Architecture and Strategy teams to ensure designs are in line with HMRCs direction of travel, influencing regime visions & roadmaps.

An experienced leader, you will need to work, often at pace, with stakeholders and delivery partners across multiple disciplines and functions in a connected, collaborative way to drive customer-focussed improvements. ​

You will also need to shape the future of your team as regime and value stage ownership is embedded in the department. ​

Design has three important components, working closely with regime and value stage owners: ​

  1. Articulate and iterate Regime vision, strategy and roadmap. Conceptual development and design (Level 0-2) of regime specific change propositions ​
  2. Employ the architectural frameworks and standards and tolerances that need to be met within the designs.​
    Regime health assessments and strategic change recommendations to feed into the relevant governance.
  3. You will lead a small team, have budget accountability and responsibility for ensuring high people engagement. You will also have shared accountability with CPD senior leaders for delivering our business plan which includes people commitments and objectives to strengthen our functions.

The successful applicant will need to demonstrate relevant experience and effective delivery of the following essential criteria:

Essential Criteria

  • Proven ability to adapt and implement design solutions for complex, large-scale, multi-dimensional transformation
  • Understanding and experience of different delivery methods and change delivery governance
  • Senior stakeholder engagement and management, including working as part of multi disciplinary teams of complementary professionals and managing conflicting views on scope
  • Track record of improving customer experience in an organisation through design
  • Effectively communicating complex information and influencing decision making
  • Strong leadership that has supported the transformation of an organisation.
