Maureen B. asked a question to Mary ..
I am currently employed as a Personal Tax Adviser and am interested in progressing into casework, compliance or investigation roles within HMRC. I have applied for several opportunities but have not yet been successful. Could you advise what development programmes, mentoring schemes, staff networks, talent programmes or training opportunities are available to help existing employees prepare for progression into these roles? I am particularly interested in opportunities that support experienced staff and colleagues in later career stages.
Thank you for your question. It is positive to hear that you are looking to develop your career within HMRC and are considering opportunities in casework, compliance or investigation.
HMRC has a range of career development and learning opportunities available to colleagues at different grades and career stages. These include coaching and mentoring, job shadowing, career and talent development resources, learning and development opportunities, and support with job applications and interviews. HMRC's mentoring offer can also help colleagues develop skills, build networks and work towards their career goals.
For colleagues interested in tax and compliance careers specifically, HMRC also has career development resources for the Tax Profession. The Tax Professionalism Career Framework is designed to help colleagues understand different roles, assess their skills and development needs, explore career pathways and develop a personal career development plan. It highlights options including job shadowing, continuous professional development, talent and leadership schemes, and coaching or mentoring.
HMRC's Customer Compliance Group also provides professional and capability development information covering job families and role profiles for Tax Professionals, possible career pathways, apprenticeships, development programmes, and coaching and mentoring.
I have not identified a development programme from the information available to me that is specifically restricted to, or designed exclusively for, colleagues in later career stages. However, many of the wider development opportunities are intended to support colleagues at different stages of their careers. For example, HMRC's regional career development information states that everyone can benefit from coaching or mentoring, whether they are new to a role or looking to develop their career further.
As you are already an HMRC employee, I would suggest exploring the internal HMRC career, learning and mentoring resources and discussing your career aspirations with your manager. In particular, it may be useful to consider mentoring and job shadowing and to use the Tax Professionalism Career Framework to identify the skills and experience expected in the types of compliance or casework roles you are interested in.
I hope this gives you some useful routes to explore and wish you well with your career development.
Hi,
I would suggest speaking with your line manager and also checking out our Intranet pages. There is all the info on our mentoring, development, and networks on there.
There are details of Stride etc. but there is also the HMRC Mentoring Hub which you can register with, to either request a mentor or a coach, or to become one.
There are regular sessions called 'Welcome Circle' that you can dial in to. They feature a different leader speaker each time, and go through all of our opportunities. The next one is on December 1st, and details can be found on office Digi Screens, or on Customer Compliance Group Viva Engage page.
Check out Viva Engage for other things too, there are lots and lots of network pages on there to help and support.
Hope this helps!
