Hello thank you for your question.
You must have the right to work in the UK (EEA, Commonwealth, Swiss, or Turkish nationals are eligible under Civil Service nationality rules). All our adverts will include a section on nationality and you must check this to apply, further checks are done during the applications process.
Skills you will pick up during your degree will be transferable to many of our roles. You don't need to have a degree in a specific discipline.
HMRC offers a range of roles, from administrative positions to specialist tax roles. The Tax Specialist Programme, a 2:2 degree (or equivalent) is typically required it opens in the autumn to recruit for roles starting the following September. This year this launched on Oct 9th to recruit for Sept 2027.
HMRC also recruits for non-graduate roles, such as Tax Officer or Compliance Officer positions (These often require GCSEs (or equivalent) in English and Maths, and strong analytical skills).

I'm a commonwealth citizen, studying LLB (Hons.) at the Uni of Law - Birmingham Campus. And I'm interested in investigative roles. Are investigative roles open to Commenwealth citizens?
Hi, generally nationals of commonwealth countries who have the right to work in the UK can apply. However we are unable to assess individual immigration or nationality circumstances through this forum, we recommend that you are ready to apply you submit an application if you believe you meet the eligibility criteria. Any nationality and right to work requirements will be assessed as part of the recruitment process.
