    Hello,

Thanks for the question – this is a really common one.

For HMRC roles, it’s important to read the job advert carefully, as requirements can vary between campaigns. Most adverts will clearly state what is being assessed and how.

    • If the advert asks for a CV, it will usually specify:
      • Where this should be entered (typically the Employment History section)
      • Whether the CV will be scored
      • Any word limits, and whether it should be split into responsibilities and achievements

Sometimes a personal or supporting statement is also required. If this is the case, there will be a separate section to complete, with:

    • A word count
    • Clear guidance on what to cover (for example, essential and/or desirable criteria)

Below is the format I usually recommend when an advert asks for a CV to be entered in the Employment History section:

    Employment History

    Employer: HM Revenue and Customs
Directorate: [e.g. Compliance Group / FIS / CDIO]
Job Title: [Grade and role title]
    Dates: [Month/Year – Month/Year or Present]

    Responsibilities:

    • Leading/managing a team to deliver against business priorities
    • Providing strategic oversight of operational or policy work
    • Managing performance, wellbeing, and development of staff
    • Etc.

    Achievements:

    • Delivered a significant piece of work or strategy aligned to HMRC priorities
    • Influenced senior stakeholders or represented the department internally/externally

If you’ve started an application and the advert refers to a CV but you can’t see an Employment History or relevant section, I’d strongly recommend contacting the vacancy holder for clarification.

Their details are always included in the advert, and they’re there to help. I always encourage my mentees to do this, as it removes uncertainty and helps you tailor your application properly.

In short: follow the job advert exactly, use the sections provided, and when in doubt, reach out to the vacancy holder.

    Warm wishes,
    Pru

    Good afternoon,

Thanks for your query. If you are referring to the Careers.HMRC site where you can join our talent network, when creating your profile you will be required to upload your CV and yes, you're right there is not an option to include a supporting statement.

If you'd like to include additional supporting information, my advise would be to include this as a separate section of your CV document.

    Dan
