Does HMRC offer job shadowing for Civil Servants from other departments? If so, how can I apply? Thanks.

    Hello Sarah,

I'm not aware of any formal job shadowing opportunities for which you can apply. From my experience, job shadowing is an informal format that you would ask directly of a person you would like to shadow and is something I have seen happen recently. However, from the information you have provided there a number of obstacles:

    • Being from another department, the number of people you might be able to shadow would be limited due to the sensitive nature of the data we work with
    • The average day is now a hybrid one so would be difficult for you to join HMRC meetings and experience what people do
    • If you are interested in investigations or tax audits you are not likely going to be permitted to be involved, equally, tax policy and fiscal event measures are incredibly sensitive and knowledge is not readily shared across the department
