These placements are designed for students undertaking a sandwich year and offer the opportunity to gain real workplace experience while developing valuable professional skills
One thing I always tell people is not to underestimate their transferable skills.
My first degree was in Business Information Systems, followed by an MBA. I didn't come into HMRC with a tax background and, if I'm honest, I knew very little about tax when I joined. Today, I'm a Tax Professional Manager and Customs and Excise Regime Lead in HMRC's Large Business Directorate.
The reason I share that is because careers are not always a straight line, and the skills you gain in one area can often open doors you never expected.
You're studying Business Management with Law, which could open doors to a wide range of opportunities across HMRC. What HMRC often looks for is your ability to learn, solve problems, communicate and work with others, not just the title of your degree.
If I were you, I'd:
- Keep an eye on Civil Service Jobs.
- Bookmark the HMRC Industrial Placements page.
- Speak with your university careers team.
- Start building examples of your skills and achievements ready for applications.
Most importantly, when opportunities come up, go for them. You might surprise yourself
