This is an exciting opportunity to join HMRC’s CDIO (Chief Digital & Information Officer) Organisation Transformation team who are enabling the organisation to move towards a more agile and product led way of working across CDIO. Agile coaches play a crucial part in this effort. As an Agile Coach you will work at organisational and portfolio level to embed effective, scalable Agile practices that enable predictable, user centred delivery. You will coach multidisciplinary teams, mentor Agile Delivery Managers and leaders, and help shape the cultural and behavioural foundations that support excellent digital delivery.
Key Responsibilities
As an agile coach, you will:
Coach and mentor multidisciplinary teams in Agile with the pilot teams who are adopting the quarterly alignment process, enabling the adoption of consistent agile and lean practices.
Coach and mentor multidisciplinary teams to implement and improve predictability, flow, collaboration and delivery outcomes.
Support teams to develop capability across the various professions in setting product visions, OKRs, and translating that into roadmap items and backlogs. This would be in collaboration with existing profession communities, for example the Product, Agile delivery or Service owner communities of practice.
Advise and influence senior leaders, providing evidence based recommendations on delivery models, team structures and organisational improvements.
Support teams to work with senior stakeholders across HMRC to understand good practices around agile, including working in sustainable and iterative ways, and to effectively negotiate roadmap items based on what is high value to do.
Champion a positive, inclusive and psychologically safe delivery culture, modelling desired behaviours and practices, such as empowering product teams and their autonomy, whilst building stakeholder trust in product team decisions.
Identify and address systemic barriers to effective delivery, guiding teams and leaders toward long-term improvements.
Build capability in teams to take on the rituals and run the cadence themselves after a period of coaching, in line with the coaching agreement.
Create a sustainable plan and roadmap for building the capability within teams, designing a plan on handover activities and targeted roles needed within teams to continue delivery in that area.
Essential Criteria:
The successful candidate will need to demonstrate practical knowledge and experience in the following:
Expert-level experience coaching Agile teams and leaders within large, complex digital organisations.
Extensive practical experience with Scrum, Kanban and Lean practices, applied across varied delivery contexts.
Strong experience improving delivery flow and predictability, using data and metrics to drive decisions.
Proven ability to coach multidisciplinary teams, including engineering, product and design roles.
Experience influencing and supporting senior stakeholders, providing clear, evidence based guidance.
Excellent facilitation skills, creating inclusive, high engagement workshops and ceremonies.
Experience building delivery capability, mentoring Delivery Managers and leading skills development.
Strong understanding of modern software delivery, DevOps ways of working and user centred design principles.
