Role Overview

We are looking for graduates who have completed, or are due to complete, a RICS-accredited degree aligned to the RICS Valuation pathway or any of the pathways listed in the Essential Criteria section below. Our graduate training programme offers the opportunity to develop your professional skills and gain practical experience across a range of property and valuation work and includes structured support through the RICS Assessment of Professional Competence (APC) programme, enabling you to work towards achieving Chartered Surveyor (MRICS) status.

The Valuation Office (VO) offers a dynamic and fast-paced working environment where no two days are the same. As a Graduate Surveyor, you will undertake property inspections, collect and analyse property, rental and market evidence, and apply valuation principles, legislation and professional judgement to support accurate valuation and taxation decisions. Working as part of a supportive and knowledgeable team, you will manage your own case load, prioritising activities to ensure compliance with statutory timescales and organisational commitments.

The work you undertake is subject to business need and will see you play an active role in delivering valuation outcome as part of a high-quality surveying and valuation service. Working alongside Chartered Surveyors will strengthen your technical and professional capabilities along with providing the opportunity to build professional networks.

Key responsibilities
  • Undertake property inspections, measurements and data collection activities to support accurate valuation and casework decisions.
  • Research, analyse and interpret property, rental and market evidence to inform valuations and recommendations.
  • Progress valuation and taxation cases, reviewing evidence and reaching reasoned conclusions supported by legislation, valuation practice, and professional judgement.
  • Prepare reports, case notes and valuation documentation to support decision making and maintain accurate records.
  • Communicate effectively with customers, professional representatives and colleagues to gather information, explain decisions and resolve queries.
  • Support the preparation of appeals and tribunal cases, including compiling evidence and, where appropriate, attending tribunals as an advocate or expert witness.
  • Collaborate with colleagues and specialist teams to deliver high-quality surveying and valuation services.
  • Manage and prioritise a varied workload, ensuring deadlines are met.
  • Maintain and develop technical knowledge of valuation principles, legislation and professional standards relevant to the role.
  • Actively participate in the RICS Assessment of Professional Competence (APC) programme and undertake continuous professional development activities to achieve Chartered Surveyor (MRICS) status.

Essential Requirements

We are looking for candidates who meet the below eligibility criteria:
  • Exhibit sound analytical skills with the ability to evaluate information, drawing on evidence to make reasoned decisions, solve problems and reach balanced conclusions.
  • Be able to communicate complex information clearly and effectively both vernally and in writing, adapting your approach to different audiences and building positive working relationships with a range of people.
  • Have well - developed organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise competing demands, demonstrating personal responsibility, attention to detail and the ability to deliver high-quality outcomes to agreed timescales.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work effectively with colleagues and stakeholders, contributing to shared goals, supporting others, and maintaining a professional, customer-focused approach in all interactions.
  • Have a genuine interest in property, valuation or the built environment, with a commitment to developing new skills and knowledge, and a strong motivation to achieve Chartered Surveyor (MRICS) status through the APC programme.
  • A full UK driving licence is essential to this role. A provisional licence is accepted at time of application however a FULL licence must be attained and evidenced within 6 months of take up date.     Before the Assessment Centre

    Shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend an Assessment Centre, where we will assess the behaviours outlined in the job description, together with your strengths, technical knowledge and skills. The assessment will consist of a range of activities, including an interview, presentation and group exercise. The assessment will include technical elements relevant to the role, providing you with an opportunity to demonstrate your knowledge, skills and understanding.

    Assessment Centres will take place week commencing Monday 30 November 2026. Further details regarding venues and booking arrangements will be provided to candidates who are successful at the sift stage.

    As part of the Assessment Centre, you will be required to deliver a 10-minute presentation. This will enable us to assess both your technical knowledge and your ability to communicate information clearly and effectively. Details of the presentation topic will be provided in advance.

    Please note that, due to data security requirements, IT equipment will not be available on the day. If you wish to use slides or other visual aids as part of your presentation, please bring sufficient printed copies for each member of the assessment panel.

    During the Assessment Centre

    You will have an opportunity to meet the Development and Surveying Profession Teams to find out more about the programme and the wider VO. You'll get a sense of what your work environment could be like as your assessment centre will take place in one of our regional hubs .

    The assessment itself will include:

    A presentation - further detail will be provided with your invite to the assessment centre to help you prepare.

    A group exercise - where we will assess you on the behaviours shown below in real time.

    A short individual interview - where we will assess your technical knowledge and your strengths.
