Gofynnodd Anhysbys gwestiwn i Customer Compliance
Career progression for a Compliance Caseworker in HMRC can vary depending on your interests and the path you choose to take. For example, around 10 years ago, I started out as a Band O Caseworker working on the tax affairs of high net worth individuals. I then progressed to Higher Officer, still as a caseworker, before moving into management roles at Senior Officer, Grade 7, and now Grade 6.
That said, progression doesn’t always have to lead into management. My mentor has always been a Tax Specialist, progressing through the grades all the way to Senior Civil Servant (SCS) while remaining focused on casework. In HMRC, many colleagues move between areas – for example, from casework to policy – and there are structured routes too, such as the Tax Specialist Programme, which can offer a clear path for career development while staying in technical roles.
As for working part-time – absolutely, you can progress well in this role. HMRC offers flexible working patterns including part-time and job-share options, and there are many examples of colleagues who have successfully developed their careers while working flexibly.
Thank you! Are there also opportunities in data analysis, given one first builds a solid knowledge foundation in tax? I have a background in software engineering.
Yes, absolutely – there are great opportunities in data analysis at HMRC, and your background in software engineering could be a real asset in this area.

And if you're interested in applying, do keep an eye on the Civil Service Jobs website for new opportunities:

There are many opportunities for data analysis in HMRC and you do not need to have a tax background if you apply for those roles direct. Look out for Data Analysis roles on the Civil Service Jobs website, usually starting at Higher Officer level.
