Hello! I have an interview for a legal apprentice role within SOLS and have been asked to present to the panel. The question will be provided two hours before the interview but I'm not sure what the question could be or how to best prepare. Any tips or insights would be greatly appreciated!
I can offer some general interview tips, based on my experience of applying for TSP. The first is obvious, but don't let nerves stop you from reading the question that is given to you properly. When thinking about how to answer, also think about the questions people might have about your answers. How will you expand or add to what you've already said? If you have to argue something, be prepared that somebody might express disagreement. How will you respectfully debate and talk this through? A lot of Civil Service recruitment is about expressing skills, and in answering the question the panel will likely be asking you to express those skills, so go back to the apprenticeship application page and read through the skills they are expecting candidates to have/demonstrate.
Hi, as Kyra has suggested I would definitely start with the job description and person specification and pick out key skills and traits SOLS is looking for such as communication, attention to detail etc. As you will not know what you need to present to the panel, think of questions you could be asked. Look at what skills/civil service behaviours are being assessed at interview stage this could give you a clue.
The more you practice presenting the better you will become, get use to speaking in front of other people. When presenting show your enthusiasm and make eye contact. The panel may ask you questions, if you do not understand do not be afraid to ask the interviewer to explain.
When putting together your answer once you receive the question bear in mind the STAR format, *Situation – describe the event or situation *Task – explain the task you had to complete *Action – describe the specific actions you took *Result – close with the specific result of your actions. Use cue cards as a prompt if you find this helpful. Don’t be afraid to promote yourself and highlight your achievements, this is your chance to really show the interviewer that you are capable and have the necessary skills to do the job.
Wishing you the best of luck
