The Customer Compliance Group (CCG) within HMRC houses several directorates with similar Auditor roles. The specific nature of audit work differs across the customer groups, affected by the differences in tax risk across the customer group profiles. The following are the areas to which you could be assigned.

Individuals and Small Business Compliance Agents Technical Compliance, Systems & Data Compliance (ISBC N&TC S&DC): Systems & Data Compliance Auditors support Compliance Caseworkers by interrogating data and sophisticated accounting systems, to tackle tax non-compliance and electronic sales suppression. We do this with in-depth analysis of complex systems and data, using a variety of tools and producing audit reports testing accuracy of customers' financial accounting and tax liabilities creating, reviewing, and approving system. Auditors are customer facing when accompanying case teams in announced and unannounced visits.

Large Business (LB): In LB Audit you will have a customer facing role working together with Tax Specialists and Customer Compliance Managers (CCMs) to ensure an effective audit function is delivered. Auditors in LB provide independent, objective assurance of external customer tax-related (including duties and levies) governance, systems and processes to add value to HMRC compliance activities. The role requires the individual to support the LB strategic risk-driven work from a cross-tax perspective.

Wealthy and Mid-Sized Business Compliance (WMBC): The System Auditor team in MSB support compliance functions within the WMBC group, including Public Bodies, Charities, Complex Evasion Programme and Wealthy individuals. Through tailored customer engagement and risk-driven compliance, we address complex tax issues using tax specialist teams. Our auditors use specialist knowledge and digital methodologies to obtain and interrogate transactional data as needed. We use data and customer insight to target support to rapidly growing businesses.

Fraud Investigation Service (FIS): FIS are a small audit team who provide audit services for FIS civil and criminal case teams. The FIS Audit team also specialise in obtaining and moving data via multiple file share sites for FIS. FIS Auditors primarily carry out work for case teams but are customer facing when accompanying case teams in announced and unannounced visits.

As an Auditor, you will be supporting our Compliance Caseworkers (Tax Specialists) in carrying out tax, duties and levies investigations.

You will be providing technical systems and data interrogation support, with the intent of tackling non-compliance and electronic sales suppression. To do this, we need to you to analyse and understand customers computerised systems, software, processes and data in relation to their accounts.

You will mentor and coach junior colleagues, building their confidence and skills using your leadership qualities. As this is a vital role within tax compliance, we will provide you with the necessary support and learning needed. Should you have the desire to progress further, we are committed to supporting your personal development. The role of an Auditor is varied and involves:
  • Interviewing customers and their representatives as part of supporting investigations, either virtually or face-to-face by visiting customers premises across the UK.
  • Employing critical thinking to analyse systems and processes in customers to identify potential risk areas and to highlight errors.
  • Having strong written and verbal communication skills to detail findings and recommendations in formal settings and in audit reports.
  • Having good organisational skills to manage multiple cases, meet targets, prioritise and communicate appropriately, updating internal systems to reflect progress and current status.
  • Identifying and documenting systems and audit trails, including details of the different software used by the customer.
  • Leading on in-depth analysis of complex systems and data, using a variety of tools and producing audit reports.
  • Testing accuracy of customers' financial accounting and tax liabilities.
  • Creating, reviewing, and approving system internal guidance, knowledge on systems, audit techniques and best practice.
  • Reconstructing partial data records using best judgement, logic, and available evidence.
  • Supporting and coaching junior Auditors with the more complex and technical aspects of their role.
Person specification

You don't need any existing knowledge or experience of tax to apply, but we are looking for the following skills and personal qualities:
  • A good level of computer literacy, including use of Office 365 tools and some proficiency in Excel and Word.
  • Able to analyse data and other information critically and make logical conclusions.
  • An interest in solving IT issues.
  • Confidence when using unfamiliar software.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills including the ability to document and maintain a robust audit trail and handle difficult conversations.
  • Good organisational skills to enable you to effectively prioritise and manage your workload and work multiple cases concurrently.
Desirable Criteria
  • An understanding of information systems and accounting software
  • An understanding of governance and risk management
  • Data extraction, manipulation and analysis techniques
Training

All new audit trainees will be placed on the Audit Learning Routeway, which may take up to 18-months to complete and may include passing the Interactive Data Extraction and Analysis (IDEA) learning check and completing a QAF (Quality Assurance Framework).

During the initial training period, digital classrooms may fall on any day between Monday and Friday within HMRC standard operating times so you may be asked to attend training which falls on non-working days for the up to 28 weeks. If you have an agreed Flexible Working Arrangement in place, we will need you to be flexible with working full-time Monday to Friday within HMRC standard operating hours in order to attend training.

Due to the training programme in place, no leave will be granted for the first two weeks in the role, following this, any annual leave is at HMRC's discretion.

The training provides you with the basic compliance skills you will need, plus specific training in how systems and processes are audited, and how to analyse and evaluate data using our data analysis tool to support HMRC's compliance reviews. In the meantime, you will also shadow your colleague to learn about how your area conducts systems audits and similar work.

The role may require travel and overnight stays.

Stage 1 - Application

Hybrid Working
